The Gardens celebrated its grand opening in 2004 after 17 years of grassroots volunteer efforts pursuing the dream of a community horticultural center in Fort Collins. In 1997 the City of Fort Collins provided funding to purchase 18 acres of land adjacent to Spring Creek and to build a state-of-the art greenhouse and visitor center. The Friends of the Gardens on Spring Creek, a nonprofit 501(c) (3) organization, secured generous donations to build a classroom, community gardens, Children's Garden, and Entry Gardens.
Campaigns are currently underway to obtain funding for the Garden of Eatin', a fruit and vegetable garden with associated outdoor demonstration kitchen, the Great Lawn with its surrounding gardens and outdoor amphitheater, and a xeric Rock Garden. Future gardens will include a meditation garden and a short-grass prairie.
